TJ Grindle lifts her son Ben Grindle from his wheelchair to his bed on Monday, Oct. 12, 2015, at the Grindle home in Flushing, Mich. Ben Grindle, 5, was diagnosed at eight weeks old with Type 1 Spinal Muscular Atrophy -- an inherited disease that causes loss of muscle and motor function. Ben's original diagnoses is that he would not live past the age of 2. Although, confined to a wheelchair and using a breathing and feeding tube, Ben is completely cognitive and attending his first day of Kindergarten this Fall.
